Halloween Countdown

One way to predict which Halloween costumes will be hot in a given year is to simply glance at the schedule of summer blockbusters. While you’re still likely to see plenty of Harry Potters and Trons this Halloween, a blast from the days of comic book past is sure to show up at your parties – Captain America.

With “Captain America: The First Avenger” collecting the best box office returns among superhero movies this summer and garnering mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics, costumes are bound to be a hit with partygoers and trick-or-treaters. Another reason you may see a lot of Captain America costumes this year is because of the multiple fun interpretations of the character, both in the movie and from the comic books.

CostumeSuperCenter, which is offering a variety of Captain America costumes this year, suggests the following options if you’re thinking about donning the red, white and blue this Halloween:

The new vintage: Comic book enthusiasts are always apprehensive when their favorite characters are slated for adaptation to the big screen – a lot can go wrong during the translation. But the new Captain America depicted in the movie stays true to the original costume, while showing the influence of the World War II era in which the movie is set. The new adaption features a darker hue and ditches the spandex for a heavier cloth more appropriate for the period . The signature helmet and shield are still there.

Classic comic book: Some things never go out of style, and one of them is classic comic book costumes. Slipping into the bright blue muscle suit with the classic winged helmet is sure to garner plenty of attention at your party.

Superhero soldier: For a different take on Captain America, consider fatigues, a brown bomber jacket and a helmet. If you really want to go the whole nine yards, wear the superhero costume underneath and change midway through the party.

Something for the ladies: There are plenty of options for women looking to get in on the Captain America fun as well. Consider a sassy take on the Captain America costume complete with a red, white and blue dress and red knee-high boots. Or go for the smart woman-in-uniform look based on the Peggy Carter character in the movie.

Don’t forget the kids: If your Halloween will be a family affair, plenty of Captain America costumes, classic and new, are available in children’s sizes. Whether you’re making your own or purchasing a costume, make sure it adheres to the safety standards recommended by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Paramount Pictures has set “Fun Size” for an October 12, 2012 release, the studio announced Tuesday.

The comedy is about a troubled but whip-smart teenage girl who loses her oddball little brother on Halloween, then has only one desperate night to track him down.

Josh Schwartz, best known for his television work — he executive produced “Gossip Girl” and “Chuck” — directed and produced.

It stars Josh Pence, Johnny Knoxville, Victoria Justice and Chelsea Handler.

Max Werner wrote the screenplay. In addition to Schwartz, the movie is produced by Brad Dorros, David Kanter and Stephanie Savage.
